Askey selects BroadLight's BL2348 SoC for GPON residential gateways

MAY 12, 2008 -- BroadLight (search for BroadLight) today announced that Askey Computer has selected its BL2348 Residential Gateway (RG) system-on-a-chip (SoC) for its new line of high-performance CPE products. Askey says it is one of the first equipment companies to meet the requirements of leading service providers for a GPON-enabled residential gateway that connect the home network directly to the access network.

"The PON market is beginning to follow other broadband markets by consolidating the modem and home router into a single residential gateway device" reports Robert Lin, president and CEO of Askey Computer. "Thanks to BroadLight's impressive integration and cost-performance of the BL2348, we were able to deliver this next-generation design to market on time."

"The BL2348's dual core PONRunner architecture is the key behind its high- performance, small size, and low power," says Raanan Gewirtzman, CEO of BroadLight. "We are very pleased to see an ODM such as Askey deliver a GPON-connected residential gateway that meets the cost and performance targets of service providers."

Broadlight says the BL2348 GPON RG SoC provides the performance, integration, and functions required for the new breed of cost-effective residential gateways connecting the high-speed digital home to FTTH services. The BL2348 leverages the PONRunner network processor to perform bridging and routing functions with throughputs of 1 Gbit/sec. Its embedded GPON MAC, integrated VoIP DSP, Ethernet switch, and interfaces for WiFi and USB create a cost-effective single-chip offering in a 19- x 19-mm PBGA-441 package, working at industrial temperature range, says the company.
