NEC to build submarine system bridging Indonesia and Singapore

MAY 14, 2008 -- NEC Corporation (search for NEC) has signed a turnkey contract with PT Indosat Tbk in Indonesia for the supply of a submarine cable system to the JAKABARE project linking Indonesia and Singapore.

The JAKABARE (Java - Kalimantan - Batam - Singapore) submarine backbone network will stretch over 1,300 km and connect Jakarta (Java), Pontianak (Kalimantan), Batam Island, and Changi (Singapore) using NEC's optical fiber transmission system based on 10-Gbit/sec x 64-wavelength DWDM technology.

On its completion in the second quarter of 2009, the JAKABARE submarine backbone network will supply 160 Gbits/sec of capacity in the initial stage, with the potential to increase capacity to 640 Gbits/sec in the future to provide robust, high-bandwidth connectivity to the growing Indonesian market, confirm NEC representatives. This network will meet the need for enhanced backhaul communications capabilities along the Indonesia-to-Singapore route, as well as for increased capacity to support high-bandwidth broadband services.

Indosat, the leading international telecommunications operator in Indonesia, says it is currently diversifying its network to address the exponential growth in demand being fueled by the increased use of data and Internet in the country.

"The JAKABARE submarine backbone network will play a very important role in meeting the growing demand for enhanced capacity and connectivity," explains Johnny Swandi Sjam, president firector of Indosat. "We have selected NEC as a trusted partner because it is one of the most experienced submarine system suppliers and can deliver the system on time to meet market demand."
