AFL Telecommunications intros Future Access Splitter Module

MAY 14, 2008 -- AFL Telecommunications (search for AFL Telecommunications) today introduced its Future Access Distributed Architecture (DA) splitter modules.

Using the DA version splitter modules with built-in attenuation allows the FTTH provider to utilize the same 32-port OLT found in the central office to service multi-dwelling unit (MDU) and single-dwelling unit (SDU) customers all from the same OLT electronics. The DA splitter modules provide enough attenuation to match the insertion loss of standard 1 x 32 and 1 x 16 splitter modules, claims the company.

Using splitter modules in the network allows the use of existing installed copper infrastructure to service the remaining distance to the subscribers' premises. This architecture eliminates the need for running all new fiber drop cables into each MDU dwelling. The new MDU-ONUs will allow a single fiber feed servicing eight to 12 subscribers using their existing copper cables.

The DA style splitter module is small and modular, featuring pigtails manufactured with Fujikura SR-15e bend-insensitive fiber. Equipped with a unique self-latching locking mechanism, the modules help an installer reduce the amount of time required to deploy service, explains AFL Telecommunications. No tools are required during installation, aiding in efficiency and reduce downtime.

The DA splitter modules are ideal for indoor and outdoor wall mounting or rack-mounting in a 1RU panel and for Gen 3 Fiber Distribution Hubs, say company representatives.
