Master Bond intros condensation cured liquid silicone system

MAY 29, 2008 -- Master Bond Inc. (search for Master Bond) says it has developed a two-part, condensation cured liquid silicone system called Master Sil 150, which can be used for the potting and encapsulation of voltage regulators and high-voltage transformers as well as optical and electronic assemblies.

The company says Master Sil 150 has good thermal stability combined with excellent flexibility. It has a Shore A hardness of 40, and its elongation at break is 230%. Low viscosity ensures complete fill-in around complicated parts to provide excellent electrical insulation and resistance to shock, say Master Bond representatives. The coefficient of thermal expansion is 11x10-4 cm/cm ° C, and its linear shrinkage is less than 0.4%.

With the addition of the curing agent, Master Sil 150 cures at room temperature to a tough, resilient silicone rubber. Its unique mechanical and electrical properties protect sensitive electronic components and assemblies from dust, moisture, ozone, thermal shock, and vibration, company sources say.

Master Sil 150 has a service temperature range from -50 • C to over 205 • C. Its excellent thermal conductivity, 7.5 x 104 cal/cm.s ° C (2.2 BTU-inch/hour-ft2- ° F) highly facilitates its use in potting and encapsulation applications. The electrical insulation properties include a volume resistivity of 5 x 1014 ohm•cm, a dielectric strength of 18 KV/mm together with a 2.9 dielectric constant and 3 x 10-3 dissipation factor at 1 MHz. Master Sil 150 will cure in contact with virtually all types of materials without inhibition, adds the company.

The Master Bond optical, electro-optical, fiber-optic and laser product line includes both one- and two-component epoxy resin compounds and one-component UV curable compositions. Some of the features of the optical systems are excellent light transmission characteristics, superior non-yellowing properties, and a high refraction index, claims the company.

Typical applications range from bonding and potting fiber-optic cables, connectors, and terminations and upgrading the vibration and shock resistance of electro-optic assemblies. Other applications include cementing and coating optical parts, potting LED devices, optical replications, bonding ferrules and connectors, and coating or encapsulating a variety of electro-optic and laser components.
