NetLogic Microsystems intros quad 10GbE PHY for LRM SFP+ and 10GBase-KR

JUNE 3, 2008 -- NetLogic Microsystems Inc. (search for NetLogic Microsystems) has introduced what it describes as the industry's first quad-port 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) physical layer (PHY) SerDes devices that deliver the high performance and low power consumption for next-generation switches, routers, and blade servers addressing the data center, enterprise networking, storage, and service provider markets. The new NLP2040 and NLP3040 PHY devices, targeted at SFP+ and 10GBase-KR backplane applications, integrate its electronic dispersion compensation (EDC), pre-emphasis on the 10G transmit lane and forward error correction (FEC) technology to support the IEEE 10GBase-LRM and 10GBase-KR standards.

NetLogic Microsystems says its new devices offer power savings and footprint reduction over competing dual-port chips, thereby allowing customers to develop higher density switches and blade servers for next-generation data centers. In addition, the NLP2040 and NLP3040 PHY devices offer an "ultra low-power mode" that allows customers to power down certain operations on chip to further reduce power consumption.

"NetLogic Microsystems' low-power, quad-port devices enable OEMs to develop data center switches and blades that have high port density and greater overall system connectivity bandwidths," said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at The Linley Group (search for Linley Group). "We expect quad-port devices to drive the increasing adoption of 10GbE as the interconnect of choice in servicing the high-bandwidth needs of data center, enterprise, and carrier networks."

NetLogic Microsystems' new NLP2040 and NLP3040 products are offered in lead-free packaging.
