Transmode launches 4G CWDM / DWDM Multi-Service Muxponder

JUNE 4, 2008 -- Transmode (search for Transmode) today announced the availability of what it claims is the industry's first 4-Gbit/sec CWDM / DWDM Multi-service Muxponder targeted for mobile backhaul and other next-generation network (NGN) migration applications.

The new Multi-Service Muxponder (MS-MXP) allows operators to deploy multiple services over a single 4-Gbit/sec CWDM or DWDM wavelength. Transmode says the new approach is ideally suited to NGN access migration and combining 2G/3G Mobile Backhaul using a combination of SONET/SDH and Gigabit Ethernet.

Utilizing eight client ports and two 4-Gbit/sec line ports to support optional line protection, the MS-MXP offers users great scalability in a highly compact form factor, say company representatives. For example, users can grow node capacity from a number of SONET/SDH clients to hybrid SONET/SDH/GbE/Fibre Channel services delivery all on a single wavelength. Consider, for instance, a mobile backhaul SDH-to-GbE transition scenario. Using the MS-MXP, the operator could upgrade from 5x OC-3/STM-1 to 5x OC-3/STM-1 plus 3x Gigabit Ethernet services, thereby increasing capacity and future proofing the backhaul network.

Furthermore, says the company, the MS-MXP includes functionality such as in-band management. Thus, the unit can be deployed in a 1U chassis to provide a very compact, low-power, and low-cost multi-service add/drop node. The same unit can be configured to support any multi-service combination up to the maximum line rate of 4 Gbits/sec and also a 4x 4-Gbit/sec regenerator function to reduce spares and operating expenses.

Using 4 Gbit/s optics, Transmode's Intelligent WDM (iWDM) capabilities, and transparent transport, the MS-MXP provides users with the best possible functionality and capacity/price ratio for single-wavelength, multi-service applications, contend company representatives. The unit supports SONET/SDH and GbE performance monitoring as well as GbE client utilization data. SONET/SDH performance monitoring is based on B1 byte calculations as defined in the SONET/SDH standards, so it is equal to traditional SONET/SDH PM without the drawback of full overhead termination.

The MS-MXP will be commercially available in June 2008 and is already contracted to customers for key applications, including mobile backhaul SDH-to-GbE migration.

"The Multi-Service Muxponder is a great addition to our product portfolio," asserts Magnus Öberg, Transmode's CTO. "This solution is already proving to be very popular and is a welcome addition to the TM-Series. This development demonstrates Transmode's capabilities at listening to our customers requests and developing solutions that meet their exact requirements in a timely manner," he notes.
