Comtrend taps BroadLight's SoC for GPON residential gateway

JUNE 10, 2008 -- GPON semiconductor and software provider BroadLight (search for BroadLight), today announced that Comtrend Corporation has selected its BL2348 System-on Chip (SoC) for a GPON residential gateway (RG) that connects the home network directly to the access network. This new generation of GPON (search for GPON) equipment enables vendors such as Comtrend to deliver the cost and performance targets needed to deploy triple-play services in volume, say BroadLight representatives.

"Comtrend joins the growing list of equipment companies that are combining the modem and router into a single RG device," reports Raanan Gewirtzman, CEO of BroadLight.  "This type of integration took place in the DSL and cable modem industries, and we are seeing similar adoption of high-performance RG devices in the GPON market as the cost comes down and performance goes up."

"We have been extremely impressed with the sheer performance of the BL2348's dual core architecture," adds Sam Liu, president at Comtrend Corporation. "Being able to deliver this performance in a low-cost design has been well received by service providers around the globe, and we anticipate much success with our new RG product line."

The BL2348 GPON RG SoC provides the performance, integration, and functions required for the new breed of cost-effective residential gateways connecting the high-speed digital home to FTTH services, say BroadLight representatives. The BL2348 leverages its PONRunner network processor to perform bridging and routing functions with throughputs of 1 Gbit/sec. According to the company, the BL2348's embedded GPON MAC, integrated VoIP DSP, Ethernet switch, and interfaces for WiFi and USB creates a cost-effective single chip offering in a 19- x 19-mm package.
