Occam Networks touts GPON FTTH customers

JUNE 13, 2008 -- Two North American telecommunications service providers have selected Occam Networks' (search for Occam) GPON products to deliver fiber to the premises (FTTP) and advanced voice, data and video services, according to the vendor. The service providers include Sogetel of Quebec, Canada and Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative based in Oxford, WI.

"Telecommunications service providers of all sizes are rapidly upgrading their networks to accommodate the enormous bandwidth demands resulting from the deluge of social and business networking, video, IPTV, and other content that both businesses and consumers are demanding," said Teresa Mastrangelo, founder, principal analyst, and director of research at BroadbandTrends, an independent market research and consulting firm specializing in the coverage of broadband infrastructure and services. "Occam Networks' GPON solutions fit the needs of many telcos, based on the ability to incorporate both point-to-point (P2P) and GPON architectures as well as the Occam Packet Engine's ability to shape and manage traffic."

Sogetel, an independent telecommunications company, operates nearly 26,000 telephone access lines in four geographic areas (Beauce-Etchemins, Centre-du-Quebec, Maskinongé, and Saint-Liboire) of Quebec through an optical fiber network linking each sector with major urban centers. According to Occam, Sogetel chose its GPON product because the carrier concluded that the equipment displayed more innovation, performance, and ease of use than other options. The company plans to continue to use Occam's BLC equipment to expand their offerings for subscribers.

Marquette-Adams currently provides triple-play services to its customers over Occam's ADSL2Plus platform. But with the rising demand for high-definition TV and video-on-demand and the expectation of additional broadband services in the future, the company felt the need to offer more bandwidth to its customers. Marquette-Adams has successfully deployed Occam's GPON technology as part of its network evolution strategy and plan to achieve 100% deployment of FTTH in the next 3-4 years. Marquette-Adams Telephone Cooperative offers subscribers local and long distance telephone service, IPTV, DSL, and Web hosting, and operates 3,500 access lines.

"As we developed plans to advance our triple play service offerings to our subscribers, we determined that a GPON solution made strategic and economic sense for the future of our access network," said Bryan Amundson, Marquette-Adams CEO. "After a thorough review process, Occam Networks' GPON products rose above competing solutions based on its ease of deployment, rapid turn up, and innovative suite of features."

Occam's GPON offering consists of the BLC 6322 Optical Line Terminal (OLT) blade for its broadband loop carrier platform and ON 2400 series Optical Network Terminals (ONTs).
