MRV debuts 10G FSO system for Carrier Ethernet access

JUNE 18, 2008 -- MRV Communications Inc. (search for MRV), a provider of components and services for optical transport networks, has announced the carrier capabilities of its TereScope TS-10GE free space optics (FSO; search for free space optics) system, which offers service providers a 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) wireless option for network access and last-mile applications.

This free space optics system, along with the rest of MRV's carrier packet optical transport products, is on display this week at the NXTcomm08 show in Las Vegas in booth #SU6507.

The TS-10GE, which MRV calls the world's first commercial 10GbE FSO system, provides carriers with a cost-effective last-mile and FTTP access system in areas with no fiber infrastructure.

Using the company's proprietary optical technology, the TS-10GE enables the delivery of Ethernet Private Line (EPN), point-to-point Ethernet (E-Line), and point-to-multipoint (E-LAN) services as defined by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) but at full 10-Gbit/sec line rate in addition to other fractional speeds.

The ultranarrow beam emitted by the optical head offers the same security as a traditional wired connection and has a range of up to 850 m in clear weather. In the event of a loss of line-of-sight, the device can be connected to an MRV 10/100 RF solution to maintain redundancy and offer 99.999% uptime.

"The interest we've had from carriers in 10-Gbit access solutions is growing as enterprises adopt this technology internally and demand the same performance from their WAN backbones. With the TereScope 10GE, carriers can now serve more of these enterprises with a wireless solution," says Noam Lotan, president and CEO of MRV Communications. "This is possible in a metro Ethernet network to a much greater degree than in a SONET/ATM network thanks to the error-handling capabilities of the protocol."

TereScope systems do not require right-of-way or government permits for installation and are deployable in a day, providing communication links for service providers or enterprises in hours instead of weeks or months, says the company.

MRV's other 10GbE access system is the OptiSwitch 930, a fiber demarcation device, which is located at the customer premises but is owned and operated by the carrier. The 1RU device features three 10GbE hot-swappable XFP LAN/WAN (10GbE/OC-192) interfaces and advanced Carrier Ethernet features including hierarchical quality of service, dynamic bandwidth and traffic management optimization, and end-to-end operations, administration, and maintenance service management.

The TereScope TS-10GE will be available in 2H08.
