C&M partners with Reflex Photonics for active optical cabling

JUNE 20, 2008 -- Reflex Photonics (search for Reflex Photonics), a developer of high-speed optical connectivity products for semiconductor packaging and data transfer applications, plans to partner with C&M Corp., a vertically integrated manufacturer of custom cable, coil cords, and cable assemblies, to further develop customized optical cabling products for high-end robotics, audio visual (A/V), government supercomputing, datacom, medical, industrial, and military applications.

Terms of the agreement state that C&M will integrate its custom active optical cables (AOCs) with Reflex Photonics' state-of-the-art LightABLE optical engines -- compact, pre-aligned encapsulated modules initially providing four independent transmit and receive channels, with each channel initially capable of 5 Gbits/sec of operation for an aggregate InfiniBand DDR supporting bandwidth of 20 Gbits/sec over 300 m of optical fiber.

"After an extensive search to find the right technology partner, Reflex Photonics and its LightABLE optical engines proved to be a perfect fit for our specialized cabling solutions, as they can withstand the harshest external operating conditions including temperature, humidity, and EMI interference," says Joseph Iamartino, vice president of business development at C&M. "Active optical assemblies incorporate the best features of copper and fiber interconnect solutions and have been sought by robotic and industrial automation specialists for years."

Their high functionality and feature integration, including a two-wire serial interface, allows the LightABLE optical engines to be used for DDR/SDR InfiniBand, 10-Gigabit Ethernet CX4/XAUI extender, 4xOC-48 SONET, multilane PCI-Express, 10-Gigabit Fibre Channel, and proprietary backplane interconnections. Future products are expected to support QDR InfiniBand.

"We are very pleased and honored to work with such a unique and inventive company like C&M. Their innovative and customized cabling solutions, which are applicable to a wide variety of customers, will be further powered by our parallel optical engines," says Gary Moskovitz, president and CEO, Reflex Photonics. "This is an outstanding opportunity for our solutions to benefit different vertical markets, such as the high flex industrial, medical, and military industries."
