Sorrento's 40G WDM product can be retrofitted into existing WDM channels

JUNE 20, 2008 -- Sorrento Networks (search for Sorrento), a global provider of metro optical access technologies, targeting the increasing bandwidth demands service providers are facing with its new GigaMux 6440, a 40-Gbit/sec metro optical access product. The company says the GigaMux 6440 provides an immediate reduction in transport costs and a four-fold increase in bandwidth capacity. Sorrento is bringing the GigaMux 6440 to market through an OEM partnership with StrataLight Communications, a provider of 40-Gbit/sec optical transmission subsystems.

The GigaMux 6440 is a carrier-class device designed to help service providers address the growth in IP traffic, storage area networks (SANs), and data centers, as well as offer more high-bandwidth capabilities to their customers. The WDM offering can be added to 10-Gbit/sec architectures without causing disruption to existing networks or requiring additional fiber cables, according to the company. The GigaMux 6440 provides full redundancy and can be retrofitted into existing 10-Gbit/sec WDM optical channels to support multihaul traffic.

"Service providers must find cost-effective ways to meet escalating bandwidth and capacity demands utilizing their existing infrastructures," says Jim Nevelle, CEO, Sorrento Networks. "The GigaMux 6440... serves as the on-ramp for service providers to gain instant access to more bandwidth using their existing fiber networks."

The GigaMux 6440 is now available for lab trials.
