Huawei to build China Unicom's first 40G WDM transport network

DECEMBER 3, 2008 -- Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. (search for Huawei) has been selected to build China Unicom's first 40-Gbit/sec optical transport network across five major cities (centering around Beijing) in Northern China.

According to China Unicom, the 40G WDM transport system will substantially increase its network capacity and enable it to meet the increasing demand for high-bandwidth broadband from China's business and residential customers using new multimedia services.

Huawei claims its 40G WDM system is four times faster than most current transport data rates and can achieve ultra-long haul transport without electrical regeneration. This reduces investment costs and enables efficient and scalable deployments in countries like China where dense urban centers are often separated by vast distances.

"Huawei is delighted to partner with China Unicom for the construction of an ultra-high-speed long-haul transport network that will provide all-IP fixed-mobile convergence services and address the unprecedented demand for real-time communications and streaming video in China," contends Christian Chua, president of Huawei's Transport Network Product Line. "Huawei's 40G WDM technologies are helping carriers worldwide deploy reliable commercial networks with increased capacity and greater efficiencies," he adds.

The 40G WDM system adopts Huawei's C-band extension technology, which increases the fiber transport bandwidth by an extra 20% and enables transport capacity of 3.84 Tbits--the largest in the industry, the company claims. It also provides comprehensive encoding technologies and cost-effective services across different application scenarios.
