Large-scale urban Last Mile projects initiated in Seattle and Manhattan
March 26, 2003--The 21st Century Infrastructures Consortium and LBDC FTTH Holdings Inc. have announced their plans to jointly build high-capacity Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH), Fiber-To-The-Desk (FTTD), and WiFi infrastructures in Seattle and New York City, starting with a pilot project in September.

American Fiber Systems signs optical network agreement with OARnet
March 24, 2003--American Fiber Systems (AFS), provider of metropolitan fiber optic networks, today announced that it has signed a 20-year agreement with OARnet for dark-fiber services in Cleveland. OARnet is the state-funded Internet services division of the Ohio Supercomputer Center in Columbus, OH.

City of Long Beach lights gas pipeline network
March 21, 2003--Long Beach Energy, working with Sempra Fiber Links, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, has completed the installation of a fiber-optic telecommunications network in a portion of its natural gas pipeline. This network links Long Beach Energy headquarters at 2400 East Spring Street with the city's Temple Avenue and Willow Street facility and is now fully operational.

FTTH Council releases updated "U.S. Optical Fiber Communities" list
March 19, 2003--The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council has updated its running list of "U.S. Optical Fiber Communities" with 20 new communities, bringing the current total to 70 communities in 20 states. The list, which was prepared by Render, Vanderslice & Associates and first released in August 2002, tracks communities nationwide that are meeting growing consumer demand for broadband through FTTH solutions.

Ohio State University chooses optical Ethernet
March 14, 2003--The Ohio State University will deploy Nortel Networks Optical Ethernet equipment, through a Nortel Networks "channel partner," to create a high-speed, converged campus network for faster and more convenient delivery of distance learning, course "content-on-demand," and other services to university students and educators.

Using Raman amplification, Nortel extends un-repeatered submarine links to 350 km
March 13, 2003--Nortel Networks today announced that extended, un-repeatered submarine links of up to 350 km can now be achieved through Raman amplification. In conjunction with Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, Nortel has successfully deployed an un-repeatered optical long haul platform in Asia.

Telecom Italia to upgrade its optical transmission backbone in collaboration with Alcatel
March 13, 2003--Alcatel will participate in the implementation of a project launched by Telecom Italia, the main Italian incumbent telecom operator, to expand and upgrade its Optical Transmission Backbone to address growing Gigabit Ethernet and ADSL service demand. For this initiative, Telecom Italia will deploy DWDM technology.

March 11, 2003 -- Czech Telecom today announced that it is providing international telecommunications services to its business and service provider customers using DWDM optical solutions from Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ).

March 11, 2003--Czech Telecom today announced that it has started providing international telecommunications services to its business and service provider customers DWDM optical solutions from Lucent Technologies. Czech Telecom and Lucent have constructed an international optical network with access points in the Slovak Republic, Austria and Germany.

Grande Communications strengthens Texas footprint, expands to adjoining states
March 10, 2003--Grande Communications has purchased approximately 3,000 route miles of fiber throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana from C3 Communications, allowing Grande to expand its product and service offerings to retail and wholesale customers.
