Alcatel, France Telecom, and Deutsche Telekom demonstrate terabit transmission
December 3, 2004 Paris -- Alcatel, France Telecom, and Deutsche Telekom recently completed a successful field trial achieving a terabit per second transmission over an existing fiber link in France Telecom's network. This trial was conducted under the framework of the TOPRATE European research project, which began in 2001.

Asia Netcom to deploy DWDM-based MAN in Tokyo
November 11, 2004 Tokyo, Japan -- Asia Netcom, a wholly owned subsidiary of the China Netcom Group, plans to revamp its existing MAN in Tokyo. Asia Netcom will migrate its current leased network platform to a new wholly owned DWDM platform to increase network capability. The upgrade is expected to be completed by January 2005.

GlobeCast adds Tokyo to its global fiber network
October 25, 2004 Paris -- GlobeCast, a satellite services provider and subsidiary of France Telecom, extended its global fiber network to Japan as a result of a deal struck with Japanese telecommunications operator KDDI. Japanese and international broadcasters can now backhaul their ad-hoc or permanent video feeds to Japan, or distribute them from Tokyo to the rest of the world, via GlobeCast's global fiber network.

Guadalupe Valley Telecommunications Cooperative deploys ADC OmniReach FTTP equipment
October 6, 2004 Minneapolis--Guadalupe Valley Telecommunications Cooperative (GVTC) has successfully deployed the ADC OmniReach fiber distribution terminal in its fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) network. The Texas-based local-exchange carrier is the largest telephone cooperative in the state, providing voice, video and Internet services to an 11 county area.

Alloptic announces nationwide EPON deployment in Rwanda
October 5, 2004 Orlando, FL--Communications provider Terracom (Kigali, Rwanda) has begun a nationwide rollout of Alloptic's Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) equipment in the central African country of Rwanda. The initial deployment is in the capital city of Kigali with emphasis placed on providing fiber connectivity to schools, government offices, and foreign embassies.

Douglas Electric selects World Wide Packets' active Ethernet FTTP equipment
October 4, 2004 Orlando, FL--World Wide Packets' LightningEdge Ethernet access equipment has been deployed by Douglas Electric, a non-profit electricity coop in Douglas County, Oregon. Douglas Electric offers business-class IP services to 20 towns and municipalities through its network, Douglas FastNet (DFN).

New round of GMPLS tests completed at UNH InterOperability Laboratory
September 27, 2004 Durham, NH--Barriers are falling to allow tier 1 Internet service providers to sell bandwidth to customers more efficiently and to offer other carriers large chunks of wholesale bandwidth on optical networks, testing at the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) has suggested.

Mexican carrier Telgua signs multi-year lease agreement with New World Network, majority owner of pan-Caribbean network ARCOS
September 21, 2004 Miami -- New World Network, Ltd., the principal owner of the Americas Region Caribbean Optical-ring System (ARCOS), announced today that it has signed a multi-year lease agreement with Telgua, the leading telecommunication provider in Guatemala, which will significantly expand Telgua's high-speed IP connectivity in the region via the ARCOS fiber-optic network.
