Nozomi to debut optical switch arrays at Photonics West December 22, 2005 Kawasaki City, Japan, and San Jose, CA -- High-speed optical switch supplier Nozomi Photonics will demonstrate what it claims are the first optically integrated arrays of 1x2 and 2x2 high-speed optical switches next month at Photonics West in San Jose, CA.
Prysmian unveils 200-micron fiber December 21, 2005 Milan, Italy -- Prysmian Cables & Systems says its scientists in Italy have made a significant breakthrough in optical fiber design with the production of the company's "PrimaLight" singlemode fiber, which features a 200-micron diameter.
AMCC expands products to support GPON December 20, 2005 Sunnyvale, CA -- Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) announced its entrance into the Gigabit passive optical network (GPON) market with the introduction of its S3157PBI, a G.984-compliant transceiver featuring clock and data recovery (CDR) capability. Also, the company introduced its S3165PBI multi-rate (125 Mbit/sec to 2.67 Gbit/sec) OC-48 transceiver, which is based on the company's serializer/deserializer (SerDes) devices.
CPE platform targets Carrier Ethernet services December 19, 2005 Spokane Valley, WA -- World Wide Packets has introduced its LE-310 as an addition to the company's LightningEdge product family. The company calls the LE-310 a customer premise equipment (CPE) device designed to provide more cost-effective deployment and delivery of converged broadband data and Internet access services via Carrier Ethernet platforms.
Foundry Networks intros dual-speed fiber platforms for optical Ethernet December 15, 2005 San Jose, CA -- Foundry Networks has announced the availability of a dual-speed 24-port fiber module for its FastIron SuperX series switch, as well as a dual-speed, all-fiber model of its FastIron Edge X series fixed-configuration aggregation switch. Also, the company has introduced a dual-speed 24-port fiber module for its BigIron RX Series Ethernet switch family.
SONET grooming switches target access, metro apps December 14, 2005 Camarillo, CA -- Vitesse Semiconductor has announced two additions to its SONET/SDH Time Slot Interchange (TSI) grooming switch family: the VSC9190 50-Gbit/sec TSI switch and the VSC9191 100-Gbit/sec TSI switch. Both devices are designed to reduce the power and complexity of SONET grooming applications, while simplifying system level design processes.
US Conec shrinks fan-out assemblies by 30% December 13, 2005 Hickory, NC -- US Conec's Concours optical circuit fan-out assemblies are designed to transition one or more multi-fiber ribbons into individual 900-µm buffered fibers, for termination to any single fiber connector type. The company says its new assemblies are 30% smaller than original designs, but feature the same matched hard backing to add strength in low profiles.
Optical amplifier targets WDM PONs December 12, 2005 Ipswich, UK -- The Centre for Integrated Photonics announced that it has developed a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier offering highly optimized performance for WDM passive optical network (PON) applications. Capable of delivering 20 dB of gain, CIP says the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) can be modulated at rates up to 1.5 Gbits/sec to provide wavelength-agile optical data transmission facilities for clients in FTTH/FTTP access network architectures.
Picolight ships 4G 1310-nm VCSEL transceivers December 8, 2005 Louisville, CO -- Picolight today introduced its 1310 nanometer (nm) vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) transceivers in a 4-Gbit/sec triple-rate (1-, 2- and 4-Gbit) Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) configuration. With extended reach capability and low power consumption, the company says the transceivers are designed for short-to-medium distance applications including 4-Gbit/sec Fibre Channel at 10 km for storage area networks (SANs).
EtherWAN intros copper-to-fiber converters December 7, 2005 Placentia, CA -- EtherWAN Systems has introduced several new copper to fiber-optic media converters aimed at FTTX applications.
