New broadband services boost DLC/MSAN market, says In-Stat
October 31, 2005 Scottsdale, AZ -- The market for Digital Loop Carrier/ Multi-Service Access Node (DLC/MSAN ) equipment is on the rise, as shipments to telecom carriers will jump from 24 million ports in 2004 to 36.9 million ports in 2009, says a report by In-Stat. According to the high tech research firm, DLCs that provided remote termination of POTS lines in the access network have evolved to become MSANs that support POTS, DSL, and FTTP access lines.

The Light Brigade wins GSA contract for fiber-optic training
October 31, 2005 Tukwila, WA -- The Light Brigade has been awarded a contract from the General Services Administration (GSA) to provide fiber-optic training and training materials to the federal government. The contract details special discounts on Light Brigade training courses, as well as on educational DVDs, videos, and CD-ROMs.

SBC to adopt AT&T brand

OIF mulls 100G technology
October 27, 2005 Milpitas, CA -- According to a press release, during a meeting of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) to review technical specifications for emerging technology, Joel Goergen, chief scientist and vice president of technology at Force10 Networks, suggested that tight integration and careful design methodology at the system level are the fundamental requirements for ensuring high performance at 100 Gbit/sec transmission speeds.

HKBN's metro Ethernet attains Cico QoS certification
October 27, 2005 Hong Kong -- Cisco Sytems has announced that Hong Kong Broadband (HKBN) has become the first service provider in the world to achieve the "Cisco Powered Network Metro Ethernet QoS Certified" status. According to the company, this certification indicates that HKBN has demonstrated, through a third-party assessment, that its Metro Ethernet service meets Cisco's best practices and standards for delivering quality of service (QoS).

Verizon installs SONET ring for Southern NH Medical Center
October 27, 2005 Nashua, NH -- Verizon recently designed and installed a SONET telecommunications network for Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. The hospital says the fiber network will help to improve its patient services.

Amedia's FTTP platform lands in Mongolia
October 26, 2005 Eatontown, NJ -- Amedia Networks, in conjunction with Korean FTTH platforms provider SejongNT, announced that Amedia's QoStream FTTP system will be installed in Mongolia by Korea's Hans Communications as part of a larger effort to modernize that country's communications infrastructure.

The Philippines' BayanTel picks ECI's optical platform for IP upgrade
October 26, 2005 Petah Tikva, Israel -- Bayan Telecommunications (BayanTel) of the Philippines has chosen ECI Telecom's optical platform to upgrade its network to deliver IP-based applications such as IPTV, VoIP, video streaming, and other bandwidth-intensive triple-play services to residential and business subscribers.

Vietnam's FPT Telecom taps Cisco for metro optical roll-out
October 26, 2005 Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam -- FPT Telecom, a multimedia and Internet service provider in Vietnam, has completed the deployment of what it says is that country's first metro Ethernet and optical network. The 10-Gbit/sec network, built with a metro Ethernet, broadband, and IP/MPLS platform from Cisco Systems, will allow FPT to deliver a variety of high-speed data, voice, and video services.

Ericsson gets Marconi's telecom assets
October 25, 2005 Stockholm, Sweden -- Ericsson today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire the most significant parts of Marconi's telecommunications business. The acquired assets represent about 75% of Marconi's turnover, including that company's businesses for optical networking, broadband and fixed radio access networks, softswitches, and data networking equipment and services. Ericsson also acquires the Marconi trademark, associated brand names, and IPR.
