Molex, KiloLambda develop method to improve light coupling between optical fibers, waveguides
September 26, 2005 Lisle, IL -- Molex, in a joint effort with KiloLambda Technologies, has developed an improved method of coupling light between optical fibers and silicon waveguides. According to the companies, the new method enables engineers to simplify coupling mechanics and improve coupling efficiency for optical component applications where efficient coupling of light is required between optical fiber and planar waveguide-based optical devices.

Engana raises $6M funding
September 26, 2005 Sydney, Australia -- Engana, a provider of wavelength selective switch (WSS) modules for use in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) applications, today announced the closing of its $6 million Series B financing round. The company says the funding will allow it to continue its development of WSS and other key network submodules, and to grow its manufacturing and global marketing capabilities.

Alight acquires Infineon's VCSEL platform
September 26, 2005 Copenhagen, Denmark -- Alight Technologies today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement with Infineon Technologies to acquire Infineon's 1300-nm GaInNAs vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) platform. According to a press release, the transaction includes manufacturing equipment and IPR rights, as well as 1300-nm wafers. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

FTTH Council announces award recipients
September 23, 2005 Washington, DC -- The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council has announced the 2005 recipients for its annual awards. The Council says the awards are to celebrate outstanding contributions from individuals in the industry who have promoted, educated, or accelerated FTTH technology and its resulting quality of life enhancements. Award winners will be celebrated at next month's FTTH Conference and Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Polatis, Continuum Photonics finalize merger
September 23, 2005 Cambridge, UK -- Closing on a previously announced definitive agreement to merge, Polatis and Continuum Photonics announced that the two companies have combined their technology, product lines, and personnel to create a single business, now known as Polatis Inc. Dave Lewis has been named the CEO of the combined company, which will maintain offices and operations in both the United States and United Kingdom.

Broadband Properties Summit highlights municipal fiber networks
September 22, 2005 Irving, TX -- The Broadband Properties' Summit, held here last week, highlighted some of the key trends in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments. While sessions also targeted real-estate developers, CLECs, and rural ILECs, the municipalities found themselves front and center of many discussions, as presenters and panelists sought to explain why municipalities should deploy optical networks and how to overcome the hurdles they will likely face in the process.

Glimmerglass optical switch chosen for NSF's OptIPuter project
September 22, 2005 San Diego, CA and Hayward, CA -- Glimmerglass announced today that the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded OptIPuter project has purchased the company's intelligent optical switch to cross-connect all singlemode fiber connections in the project's 10-Gbit/sec optical network backbone, which is connected to the National LambdaRail (NLR).

Texas CLEC selects Optical Solutions' GPON platform
September 22, 2005 Minneapolis, MN -- Optical Solutions (OSI) announced that Santa Rosa Telephone Cooperative of Vernon, Texas has initiated services using the company's FiberPath 500 gigabit passive optical network (GPON) system, in the first of several competitive FTTH deployments planned by the CLEC over the next five years.

China's CERNET picks Cisco's carrier routing platform
September 22, 2005 Beijing, China -- Cisco today announced that the China Education and Research Network (CERNET) will deploy the company's CRS-1 Carrier Routing System to upgrade its national backbone network. CERNET is a national education and research computer network, funded by the Chinese government and directly managed by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Capella raises $10M, receives $1M BIRD grant
September 21, 2005 San Jose, CA -- Capella Photonics, a provider of wavelength selective switch (WSS) modules for use in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) and optical cross connect (OXC) applications, today announced the closing of $10 million in its Series D financing round.
