Transponder manufacturers bind to develop 10-Gbit/sec optical duo-binary multi-source agreement September 21, 2005 Glasgow, Scotland -- Optical communications companies Essex Corporation, Kodeos Communications, and TeraSea announced today their formation of a 10-Gbit/sec Optical Duo-Binary, Multi-Source Working Group (ODB MSWG). The group's objective is to develop a common specification for extended reach 10-Gbit/sec transponder modules.
Slovenian utility deploys Ciena's WAN optical platform September 21, 2005 Linthicum, MD -- HSE&DEM, the Republic of Slovenia's largest electric utility, has selected Ciena's next-generation optical multiservice switches, optical multiplexers, storage extension platforms, and network management systems to interconnect its locations throughout that country with the company's Adaptive wide area network (WAN) technology. The network will deliver IT services used in the production and delivery of electrical energy to the utility's customers.
Voljatel picks Zhone for optical services deployment September 20, 2005 Oakland, CA -- Zhone Technologies today announced that Voljatel Telekomunikacije (VoljaTel), a carrier based in Slovenia, has selected Zhone's Multi-Access Line Carrier (MALC) and GigaMux 1600 optical transport products to offer consumers and small businesses an alternative to traditional telephone services through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.
ADVA named preferred optical vendor by The Quilt September 20, 2005 Mahwah, NJ and Munich, Germany -- ADVA Optical Networking announced that it has been accepted as a preferred vendor of optical networking equipment in The Quilt's Vendor Information Exchange (VIX) program. The Quilt is a U.S.-based coalition of advanced regional networking organizations in the research and education sectors.
Walker, ADC seal FTTX product distribution deal September 20, 2005 Welcome, NC -- Telecommunications distributor Walker and Associates announced that it has selected ADC as a strategic supplier of FTTX products. ADC will provide the distributor with equipment from its OmniReach product line, which includes fiber distribution and fiber access terminals, as well as the recently introduced OmniReach Multi-Fiber Service Terminal (MST) and Wavelength Division Multiplexers.
Paul Bunyan Telephone taps APACN for FTTH project September 20, 2005 Minneapolis, MN -- Paul Bunyan Rural Telephone Cooperative of Bemidji, Minnesota has selected APA Cables & Networks' (APACN's) fiber management platform for deployment of FTTP services. According to a press release, after an extensive pilot program over the last year, full deployment of the platform began this summer. With the platform, the co-op says it expects to introduce services to more than 20% of its residential subscribers by the end of the year.
Alcatel, UK Highways Agency ink €120M telecom contract September 19, 2005 Paris, France -- Alcatel has been awarded a contract, valued at approximately 120 million euro, to build and deploy a converged high-speed telecommunication network alongside England's motorways. Implementation of the project will begin in 2006, with completion of the core transmission network planned for the first quarter of 2007.
Hitachi FTTP platform wins USDA RUS acceptance September 19, 2005 Atlanta, GA -- Hitachi Telecom's AMN1200 FTTP system has been accepted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service (RUS) for deployment under the Rural Broadband Access Loan and Loan Guarantee Program. The FTTP system was included on the RUS List of Acceptable Materials in category "ae," access equipment, as of July 28, 2005.
Analyst touts Tellabs win at Verizon September 19, 2005 Memphis, TN -- Simon M. Leopold, an analyst at investment and financial services firm Morgan Keegan, today issued the following statement on behalf of the firm: "We believe that Verizon selected Tellabs as its sole initial supplier for next-generation optical equipment, which comes as a big surprise...this win makes Tellabs a contender in the recovered optical systems market with bragging rights on the leading edge."
PPL Telcom picks White Rock Networks September 19, 2005 Richardson, TX -- White Rock Networks, a provider of next-generation optical transport systems for metro networks, announced that PPL Telcom has selected its transport and multi-service optical access products to provide backhaul capabilities to cell sites in the Northeast United States for "one of the nation's top wireless carriers."
