August 3, 2005 Milan, Italy -- Telecom Italia has agreed to purchase Tiscali International Network's fiber-optic network for a total consideration of €8 million.
fSONA's optical wireless systems picked for Kuwaiti healthcare network
August 2, 2005 Mclean, VA -- fSONA Systems, a provider of optical wireless systems, today announced that Smartlink Telecom, in strategic alliance with Advance Technologies Company (ATC), is deploying a city-wide, high-capacity wireless network throughout Kuwait City for that country's Ministry of Health (MOH).
Alltel incorporates ADC's FTTX platform

Alltel says that combining ADC's passive and active optical components into its product portfolio will enable telecommunications providers with access to a complete, end-to-end connectivity platform.
Chelan County fiber network takes off

Broadwing, AireSpring enter resale agreement
August 1, 2005 Austin, TX -- Broadwing Communications and AireSpring announced that they have entered into an agreement under which AirSpring's national group of sales agents is reselling communications services supported by Broadwing's nationwide all-optical network. AireSpring is offering Broadwing-supported local connectivity, long-distance, dedicated Internet access and private line services to its nationwide corporate and residential customers.
Arkansas' Pinnacle Communications selects Optical Solutions' GPON
August 1, 2005 Minneapolis, MN -- Optical Solutions today announced that it will support Pinnacle Communications in deploying an FTTH network in the city of Lavaca, Arkansas. The river valley community, located 15 miles east of Fort Smith, is being refurbished with an all-fiber infrastructure, to enable a range of communication and entertainment services powered by the company's FiberPath system.
TelCove expands into Kansas City

Transworld Associates picks Tyco Telecommunications to supply Middle East submarine fiber-optic network
July 29, 2005 Morristown, NJ -- Tyco Telecommunications, a supplier of undersea fiber-optic networks and marine services, today announced the beginning of construction for the TWA-1 undersea fiber optic cable network, as part of a multi-million dollar turnkey contract with Transworld Associates (TWA), a joint venture between Orascom Telecom of Egypt and Saif Group of Pakistan.
Continuum Photonics, Polatis, switch up
July 29, 2005 Billerica, MA, and Cambridge, UK -- Optical switch vendors Continuum Photonics Inc. and Polatis Ltd. have agreed to merge under an as-yet undisclosed name. The two firms, both of which offer products based on piezo-electric beam steering, will combine additional cash as well as current investors and product lines on the merger's expected completion date of August 15, Editorial Director Stephen Hardy reports.
OIF commences work on ultra-high data rate interface specifications
July 28, 2005 Fremont, CA -- Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) members convened in Brussels this month to begin work on defining system and component requirements for future intra-system interfaces. The forum says its Physical Layer User Group has begun work on specifications for ultra-high data rate interfaces including 100, 120, and 160 Gbit/sec, that will enable a higher density than the organization's current Common Electrical Interface (CEI).
