BroadLight GPON SoC incorporates MIPS processor core
July 26, 2005 Mountain View, CA -- BroadLight and MIPS Technologies today announced that BroadLight has licensed the MIPS32 4KEc processor core for use in its BL2000 GPON and BPON SoCs.

Portugal's Cabovisão chooses Alcatel's optical multi-service platform
July 25, 2005 Paris, France -- Alcatel today announced that it has signed a contract with Cabovisão, a privately-owned cable operator in Portugal, to migrate the provider's existing transport network infrastructure toward a multi-service network. The company says its optical networking platform will enable the operator to enhance the delivery of triple play services to its residential users, while offering high-speed Ethernet services to enterprises throughout the country.

UNH-IOL mounts unified IP/optical control plane/GMPLS test event
July 25, 2005 Durham, NH -- The UNH InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) today announced the completion of a week of generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) tests that, according to the lab, demonstrate various benefits of this maturing unified control plane technology, including its ability to simplify the management of complex carrier networks.

Teleglobe to be acquired by VSNL
July 25, 2005 Hamilton, Bermuda --Teleglobe today announced its entry into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), India's leading provider of international communications and Internet services. The transaction is structured as an amalgamation of Teleglobe with a newly formed subsidiary of VSNL.

ADC gets FONS
July 22, 2005 Minneapolis, MN -- ADC today announced an agreement to acquire Fiber Optic Network Solutions (FONS) for payments of $172 million in cash, net of any FONS debt at the time of closing. This amount is inclusive of a retention bonus pool that will be paid to most of FONS' current employees. The transaction is expected to close during the next 30 to 90 days.

EZchip Technologies announces sampling of NP-2 network processor
July 21, 2005 San Jose, CA -- EZchip Technologies, a fabless semiconductor company providing high-speed network processors, recently announced that it has begun shipping samples of its NP-2 network processor to customers. The company says that concurrent testing of device also continues, in order to verify the functionality of all features and various deployment scenarios expected in 2006.

OIDA sees optical transceiver technology achieving 10x performance / 3x price gains within 7 years
July 21, 2005 Washington, DC -- Speaking at the IEEE's annual High Speed Interconnects Workshop held in Sante Fe, New Mexico in May 2005, Dr. Michael Lebby, executive director at OIDA, told an audience of optoelectronic and electronic manufacturers and researchers that miniaturization in 10-Gbit/sec technology will continue its historic trend of 10x performance gains at 3x price increases, enabling the achievement of 100-Gbit/sec transceiver modules at $1500 by 2012.

ZTE to expand Bulgarian DWDM network
July 21, 2005 Shenzhen, China -- ZTE today announced that it will expand Bulgaria's first DWDM optical network, installed earlier this year by the company, in a contract announced with Cabletel, the Bulgaria's leading fixed-line operator.

Alcatel finalizes landing of Sea-Me-We 4 and Med Cable submarine networks
July 20, 2005 Marseilles, France -- Alcatel recently announced that the Sea-Me-We4 and Med Cable international submarine cable networks are now fully deployed, having successfully landed in the city of Marseilles, France. The company, which had turnkey responsibility for the realization of the two networks, says the landings strengthen the city's role as a key hub for international communications with Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Internet2 picks Glimmerglass optical switches for network testbed project
July 20, 2005 Hayward, CA and Ann Arbor, MI -- Glimmerglass today announced that Internet2, a U.S.-advanced networking consortium led by the research and higher education community, has selected the company's intelligent optical switches for deployment in five national network nodes located in Seattle, Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
