Tiscali deploys Chiaro Enstara platform June 2, 2005 Richardson, TX -- Tiscali International Network (TINet) has deployed Chiaro Networks' Enstara core-router platform as part of an upgrade to the carrier's international IP/MPLS backbone. Chiaro says the deployment is the first since ECI Telecom became the exclusive global distributor of the platform.
Ball State University to deploy fSONA's laser system June 2, 2005 McLean, VA -- Researchers at Ball State University (Muncie, IN) are set to deploy fSONA Systems' point-to-point laser communications system, which the company says is designed to transmit broadband communications among buildings. For the project, faculty and students from the university's Institute for Wireless Innovation (IWI) are installing the company's free space optics (FSO) communications equipment.
Transmode sets foot in North America June 2, 2005 Stockholm, Sweden and Plano, TX -- Transmode, a global provider of optical networking platforms, today announced its entry into the North American market. To lead the company's North American business, Anders Lundberg, the former CEO of Lumentis, with whom Transmode merged in March, will take helm as CEO of the newly established Transmode Inc., and will relocate to Plano, Texas, where the company has established a sales office.
Lucent to build optical networks for Guangdong Telecom June 2, 2005 Beijing, China -- Lucent has announced two optical networking contracts with Zhongshan Telecom and Zhuhai Telecom, two local branch companies of Guangdong Telecom, a provincial subsidiary of China Telecom. The company will supply a range of optical equipment that it says will allow the two companies to cost-effectively optimize their existing network architectures, while expanding capacity to meet the increasing needs of emerging data services.
BellSouth picks Tellabs for FTTC June 1, 2005 Naperville, IL -- BellSouth has selected Tellabs as the exclusive supplier for the fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) portion of the carrier's next-generation network transformation. The BellSouth contract grants FTTC exclusivity to Tellabs through the end of 2006. The carrier said it selected Tellabs' FiberDirect platform for its ability to support high-bandwidth consumer services over a deep fiber network.
KDDI again taps Corrigent for metro expansion June 1, 2005 San Jose, CA -- Corrigent Systems' CM-100 Packet Add-Drop Multiplexer (ADM) platform was selected by Japan's KDDI for furthering the expansion of the carrier's packet-based metro transport network. KDDI will use the 10-Gbit/sec multiplexer platform for the second phase of the network's deployment; the first phase, announced last year, included over 1,000 units of the platform, and is now carrying commercial traffic, according to a press release.
Bay Microsystems picks up Parama Networks, achieves profitability June 1, 2005 Santa Clara, CA -- Bay Microsystems, a provider of programmable packet processors, software, and network elements for broadband networks, today announced that it has achieved profitability, as well as what it calls record revenue growth. The company also announced its first acquisition, entering a definitive agreement to buy Parama Networks, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in system-on-a-chip platforms for telecommunications transport equipment.
ZTE to provide China Telecom with fixed NGN June 1, 2005 Beijing, China -- Telecommunications provider ZTE will deliver what it's calling the world's largest fixed next-generation network (NGN), under terms of a co-operation agreement announced today with China Telecom. As part of the agreement, ZTE will be the exclusive provider for the carrier's fixed NGN Backbone Long-distance Voice Network program.
BellSouth opts for JDSU's passive optical platform June 1, 2005 San Jose, CA-- JDS Uniphase (JDSU) announced today that BellSouth has selected the company's WaveReady platform for passive optical transport in the loop portion of the carrier's broadband network. According to a press release, the company's optical subsystems will enable delivery of next-generation services, in addition to serving as a new WDM platform for the carrier. Shipments of the subsystems are expected to begin within a year.
Resolute, BroadLight team to enable carrier-grade circuit emulation services over GPON May 31, 2005 Modi'in, Israel and Mountain View, CA -- Resolute Networks and BroadLight have announced a joint Circuit Emulation Services (CES) platform that the companies say enables Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) equipment manufacturers to incorporate T1/E1 voice, leased line, and frame relay services into FTTP access networks.
