Amedia obtains $6M long-term financing April 25, 2005 Holmdel, NJ -- Amedia Networks has entered into agreements with individual and institutional investors to privately place shares of its newly designated Series B 8% Convertible Preferred Stock for gross proceeds of $6 million. The company says the funds will be used for marketing and customer support infrastructure, advanced feature development, and other business operations. The transaction is expected to close and fund later this week.
MCI concludes Qwest offer is superior April 25, 2005 Ashburn, VA -- MCI today announced that its board of directors has determined that Qwest's latest offer to acquire the company is superior to the terms of the current MCI/Verizon merger agreement. Under the terms of that agreement, Verizon has five business days to respond with a revised proposal. Under Qwest's irrevocable offer, MCI's board of directors has until May 3, 2005 to change its current recommendation in favor of the MCI/Verizon merger agreement.
Charter deploys Harmonic's CWDM platform in SoCal April 22, 2005 Sunnyvale, CA -- Charter Communications has deployed Harmonic's CWDM platform to deliver high-speed network services to business, government, and education customers in Southern California. Harmonic's FLXLink commercial services platform provides Internet, VPN, and other managed services with access speeds up to 1-Gbit/sec.
HKBN launches FTTH service April 21, 2005 Hong Kong -- Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) has announced the official launch of its "bb1000" service, which provides symmetric, 1-Gbit/sec FTTH connectivity. According to the carrier, Hong Kong ranks among the world's first markets where one third of total homes (approximately 800,000 out of 2.2 million) receive Internet access service over fiber.
MTU/MDU in-building broadband market to quadruple by 2009, says report April 21, 2005 Scottsdale, AZ -- Increasing demand for broadband services will propel the market for MTU/MDU in-building broadband services equipment to more that fourfold growth in coming years, says a report from In-Stat. The firm projects MTU/MDU equipment revenues to grow from $364 million in 2004 to nearly $1.5 billion in 2009, with much growth driven by "greenfield" buildings requiring broadband infrastructure, and by the impact of fiber deployments on the MTU/MDU environment.
Time Warner and Comcast buy Adelphia April 21, 2005 Greenwood Village, CO -- Time Warner and Comcast have reached definitive agreements to acquire substantially all the U.S. assets of Adelphia Communications, for $12.7 billion in cash and 16% of the common stock of Time Warner's cable subsidiary, Time Warner Cable. Adelphia is an operator of cable systems in the U.S. with approximately 5.2 million basic subscribers in 31 states.

Motorola to outfit Verizon FTTP project April 20, 2005 New York, NY and Schaumburg, IL -- Verizon has awarded Motorola a five-year contract to supply equipment for the deployment of the carrier's FTTP networks. According to a press release, Motorola's FTTP technology will help Verizon deliver broadband services, including video entertainment and voice capabilities, to homes and businesses served by the carrier's all-fiber network. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Xelerated adds $17M Series C funding April 20, 2005 Santa Clara, CA -- Xelerated today announced that it has closed a $17 million series C round with new investors Accel Partners and Amadeus Capital Partners. Existing investors Atlas Venture and Alta Partners also participated in the round. The company says the funding will be used to build out global sales and support, as well as to accelerate product development.
Metrobility, Dakota Supply Group partner April 20, 2005 Merrimack, NH -- Metrobility Optical Systems has partnered with Dakota Supply Group to bring Metrobility's high-speed, fiber-optic communications products to customers in eight mid-western states. According to a press release, the relationship will offer Metrobility's product range, supporting high-speed Ethernet, DS3, SONET, fiber channel, and CWDM applications, to over 250 independent telephone companies throughout the region.
