Strong growth continues for North American wireline capex in 2Q06, says report
August 7, 2006 London -- Ovum-RHK today posted its analysis of second quarter 2006 revenue and capital spending by North American network operators. Wireline operators increased capital spending by 16% versus the second quarter of 2005, following a 22% increase in 1Q06. This was despite wireline revenue declines of 5% to 6% versus the first half of 2005, say analysts.

European Union funds photonic firewall project
August 3, 2006 Ipswich, UK -- EU funding of 2 million Euros has been announced for a three-year project to develop a reconfigurable photonic "firewall on a chip." Called WISDOM, (WIrespeed Security Domains Using Optical Monitoring), the new system will aim to provide a tool to implement security checks and algorithms directly at high-speed optical data communication rates.

Electronicast: Harsh environment fiber-optic components market to double by 2009

Time Warner Cable calls Sprint Nextel for VoIP support
August 3, 2006 Reston, VA -- Sprint Nextel has been selected to help provision Time Warner Cable's Digital Phone service in an additional 14 service areas. Time Warner Cable will use Sprint Nextel's IP network to offer voice over IP (VoIP)-based phone service across most of its footprint of approximately 28 million homes-passed, except for Time Warner Cable's systems in New Hampshire and Maine.

Transit Telecom selects Global Crossing for IP services
August 3, 2006 Sao Paulo, Brazil -- Global Crossing has won a one-year contract to provide Brazilian carrier Transit Telecom with IP transit and colocation services. Transit Telecom, which offers services to the residential and corporate markets, will use the Global Crossing facilities to expand its current telecom infrastructure to meet the company's accelerated growth, especially with the increase of its network in Brazil.

AMCC to acquire Quake Technologies
August 3, 2006 Sunnyvale, CA -- Editorial Director Stephen Hardy reports that what began as a potential product development partnership has evolved into an acquisition. Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Quake Technologies, Inc. for approximately $69 million in cash.

Corning Cables' FTTH products get RDUP listing
August 2, 2006 Hickory, NC -- Corning Cable Systems, part of Corning Inc.'s Telecommunications segment, has been listed by the Rural Development Utilities Program (RDUP) for its complete portfolio of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) products, including both cable and hardware.

Telecom Engineering wins multi-node CWDM contract
August 2, 2006 Golden Valley, MN -- Telecom Engineering, Inc. has been awarded the supply, engineering, installation, provisioning, and ongoing 24x7 technical support contract for a multi node CWDM network for Central Transport Group, LLC in Minnesota.

XO Communications lights nationwide inter-city network segments
August 2, 2006 Reston, VA -- XO Communications is now carrying customer traffic on major segments of its new, wholly owned next-generation nationwide long-haul inter-city fiber-optic network. As announced earlier this year, XO is upgrading its long-haul network by deploying the Infinera DTN optical system. The upgrade will allow XO to more than double network capacity and enable XO to offer a broader range of higher-speed data transport services.

Viasys Services, Inc. to provide further infrastructure services in Florida
August 2, 2006 Atlanta, GA -- Charys Holding Co. Inc. announced that its subsidiary, Viasys Services, Inc., has been awarded two additional contracts to a previously announced transaction with "a leading provider of voice and data communications systems" in the Tampa Bay area.
