IntexyS, Lightfleet partner for free space transmission
SEPTEMBER 17, 2007 — IntexyS Photonics SA (Toulouse, France) and Lightfleet Corporation (Camas, WA) will collaborate to develop optical component technologies for data- and performance-intensive computing, communications, and embedded-systems applications. The components use data-carrying light beams in free space, rather than fiber optic or copper conduits.

Photop to buy coating company
SEPTEMBER 14, 2007 — China-based Photop Technologies, Inc., will acquire Optimal Coatech Corp. Ltd. (OPDM). The move will improve Photop's penetration in telecom and consumer-electronics markets, as well as adding vertical integration, says John Ling, CEO, Photop.

Silk telecom, Nortel build metro Ethernet in Australia
SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 — Silk telecom's Australia network will feature Nortel's provider backbone bridging (PBB) and provider backbone transport (PBT) technology, which uses industry-standard Ethernet as the fundamental carrier-grade transport technology. Silk plans to deliver high-bandwidth services via the metro network.

AboveNet expands fiber network into CRG's Bay Area data center
SEPTEMBER 11, 2007 — AboveNet Inc. added fiber connectivity to the Valley Exchange CRG West data center, an 80,000-sq.ft. facility recently constructed in Milpitas, CA. AboveNet will establish a point of presence at Valley Exchange for diverse fiber service to the San Francisco Bay Area and other metropolitan regions.

OIDA launches the Silicon Photonics Alliance
SEPTEMBER 10, 2007 — The Silicon Photonics Alliance, the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association's (OIDA's) first formal community of interest (COI), has formed to promote silicon photonics in standards, commercial adoption, and vendor communication. Tom Palkert, Luxtera, will lead the Alliance.

Undersea fiber connection links Georgia, Western Europe
SEPTEMBER 7, 2007 — Caucasus Online (Tbilisi, Georgia) contracted Tyco Telecommunications, a business unit of Tyco Electronics (Morristown, NJ), to construct an undersea fiber optic system from Poti, Republic of Georgia, to Varna, Bulgaria. The Black Sea system will then link to Caucasus' terrestrial system and other international carriers, providing Georgian customers with higher-bandwidth direct communications with Western Europe.

Dune, Vitesse partner for Ethernet
SEPTEMBER 6, 2007 — Dune Networks and Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation will collaborate to ensure Dune's next-generation devices interoperate with Vitesse's triple-speed Ethernet MACs, using next-generation XAUI interfaces.

Fujitsu upgrade enables IPTV, VoIP in rural KY
SEPTEMBER 6, 2007 — Mountain Telephone, a rural cooperative communications provider, deployed Fujitsu Network Communications' (Richardson, TX) FLASHWAVE optical networking products and NETSMART management solution to bring Internet protocol television (IPTV) and other voice, data, and video services to its rural KY subscriber base.

AFS augments Salt Lake City network
SEPTEMBER 6, 2007 — American Fiber Systems (AFS) added to its fiber optical metro network in the Salt Lake City region, citing commercial and customer growth in the West Jordan, UT, area. The expansion will connect AFS' existing network to a major wireless provider.
