Ovum RHK: Optical component sales top $1 billion for the second sequential quarter
MARCH 24, 2008 -- The optical component market overall finished the year strong, with quarterly revenues of $1.1 billion, up 3% sequentially and 4% versus 4Q06, say Ovum RHK analysts. Full-year 2007 topped $4.0 billion, up 4% compared to 2006.

MARCH 19, 2008 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. says that Finisar has selected Agilent's Advanced Design System (ADS) software to support the development of their optics products designed for the telecom market.

Verizon Business, Asian partners activate U.S.-China leg of TPE submarine system
MARCH 18, 2008 -- Verizon Business says it is working closely with its Asian partners, including China Telecom, China Netcom, China Unicom, Korea Telecom, and Chunghwa Telecom, to activate the U.S.-mainland China  portion of the Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) submarine cable in July, a month in advance of the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

FOA creates new certification for "Fiber Optic Network Design"
MARCH 18, 2008 -- The FOA has certified almost 24,000 fiber-optic technicians in the last decade, many of whom have also been designers of the networks they install. They have asked the FOA to create standards for fiber-optic network design and offer a specialist certification in the field.

Thailand's Khon Kaen University selects Alcatel-Lucent equipment
MARCH 18, 2008 -- Thailand's Khon Kaen University (KKU) has implemented an all Alcatel-Lucent data network to deliver e-learning, voice, and Internet services to the faculty and its students. KKU's Gigabit Ethernet backbone network comprises 90 km of optical fiber linking 8,500 connection points throughout the 120 buildings on campus.

IBM touts nanophotonic switch to route data between chip cores
MARCH 17, 2008 -- IBM says its scientists have built the world's smallest nanophotonic switch with a footprint about 100X smaller than the cross section of a human hair. The switch could be used to transfer information inside a computer chip by using photons instead of electrons.
